Not really, I use base and it only takes a month or to for it to show results, just keep upgrading it otherwise you won't be able to later.

Well to each their own 

Silverboxes has better better results faster and silverboxes is good early and endgame and base only get good midgame

Focus on base and mines and only level up factory to lvl2 to save money

That's not actually better, you want to level them all up at the same time otherwise it'll take even longer at the end. Also, get the power kits in base is a must, and those are only at level 15.
