I had wondered whether the opponents were bots, seemed kind of convenient that you can pause for 5 minutes and it has no negative effects

Those are computer generated bots lol
Usually, when you're on a streak, you see opponents with such high level plants
 
They're meant to break your streak and force you to use gems if you wanna continue
Not surprising, it's EA afterall

Update: I am no longer playing PvZ 2 anymore. I feel like these update in the game didn't fit me well. Although the game is very F2P friendly but i think PvZ 2 has changed from a strategy game to a P2W so much. You just need to spam premium plants to win while the other F2Ps are having an insane grinding. I am going to try another game in google play.

So when I played, it was actually on my mom's phone, and by the time she finally felt like it took up too much time and phone memory and deleted it, she had mastery level shadow plants and all the f2p premiums of the time and was in jade league nearly every tournament.
