ascension is when you have a max mythic (example, nightmare), you can ascend it to DIVINE and have its stats slightly upgraded. There are 4 types of ascension relics, common, rare, epic, and legendary.

 

For common ascensions, you'd only need two. For rare ascensions, you'd need three. For epic ascensions, you'd need four. And finally, for legendary ascension, you'd need 5. 

Ascension relics can be earned starting from rank 15 and above. Clan war also gives out ascension relics.
